Theologian.
Hoskyns was educated at the Universities of Cambridge and Berlin, where he was influenced by the thought of Adolf harnack. He was ordained to the Anglican ministry in 1908 and, after the First World War, he taught at Cambridge. He is remembered for his English translation of Karl barth’s Commentary on Romans and for his Riddle of the New Testament, written with F.N. Davey, in which he argued for the historical reality of the Jesus Christ of faith. He also contributed ‘The Christ of the Synoptic Gospels’ to Essays Catholic and Critical and ‘Jesus the Messiah’ to Mysterium Christi. His important commentary on the Fourth Gospel was published posthumously.
